Release Notes

Here we give you a short summary on the last OLAT Releases. For detailed information on bugs, improvements, new features or tasks related to an already published or an upcoming release check out our Bug Tracking system.

OLAT 7.2.1

Bug fixes and new features in OLAT 7.2.1 are:

  • selection of correct answers in tests is back
  • Description is now imported at course import
  • Wiki: Link on opened image leads back to Wiki page
  • Folders with Umlaute can now be used with WebDAV
  • Selenium and jUnit testcases for 7.2.1
  • peakview for portfolio task added
  • topic assignment: issue table search results are now remembered
  • topic assignment: notify topic tutors or authors on deletion of a topic

Please note that we skipped the 7.1 (just as a number) and pushed 7.2 as next release.


Besides some new features we did some big improvements and enhancements mainly on the level of the core. It's not that users will be affected directly. Those changes are related to the development of OLAT. It is absolutely necessary that you get in touch with the new guidelines and the way how to develop features and improvements.

The new features and major improvements in OLAT 7.2 are:

  • Ajax in IE9 is now supported
  • Group titles now allow more than 100 characters
  • Course export no longer mutilates titles
  • wrong and missing keys
  • ePortfolio
  • Tagging infrastructure
  • Enhanced automated testing infrastructure
  • Language aware layouts (e.g. header images with translated text)
  • Chat and topic assignment component improvements
  • Flagging of answered questions, numeration of answers and memo fields in tests
  • Glossary with French morphological information
  • New building block "info message"
  • Accessibility and usability improvements
  • Various improvements: LDAP, framework, build and deployment process, GUI issues
  • Refactoring Part 1

OLAT 7.0

Some of the new features of OLAT 7 are a course element supporting IMS Basic LTI interoperability, a wizard simplifying the creation of OLAT courses, a pluggable QTI 2.1 test engine and many improved features and components. And last but not least the installation of OLAT for productive use got significantly easier! No need to download source code anymore, just grab the WAR file and deploy it in your Tomcat servlet engine!

The new features and major improvements in OLAT 7.0 are:

  • Integration of external tools through the IMS Basic LTI interoperability standard
  • Implementation of a course wizard with which courses with the most popular elements can be easily created
  • Integration of a QTI 2.1 test engine (ONYX plugin)
  • Integration of OLAT into existing IT infrastructure with the new REST API (beta)
  • Mail attachments in user visiting card, group and course contact form
  • Various component improvements: topic assignment, context sensitive help, task, calendar, full-text search, single page, notifications
  • Improvements in LDAP module for synchronisation of large LDAP directories and OLAT cluster operatings (operations)
  • Browser side caching of course media resources to reduce network load
  • Refactoring of depricated forms using "Flexi Form" infrastructure part III
  • Packaged deployment (WAR) consistent with the Java Web Specification thereby simplifying the rollout of the application
  • Various bugfixes and software upgrades

OLAT 6.x

OLAT 6.0 is a major release including new functionality as well as bug fixes. The most important new features of the 6.0 release are listed below followed by the details of the whole 6.x release.

  • Portlets on HOME are configurable: decide how many entries will be displayed, and in which order.
  • Layout updated including enlarged, new icon set.
  • CSS framework YAML: increased robustness and browser-compatibility of entire layout.
  • Further accessibility improvements: so called Web2.a mode (beta) which allows visually impaired users to swiftly detect parts of the screen that have been changed after the last click.
  • Various chat improvements: e.g. more than one chat conversation possible, chat window remains while browsing through OLAT.
  • OLAT output complies with XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
  • New wizard component, used e.g. in enhanced course publish workflow.
  • Course content is by default rendered in an iframe: increased navigation speed.
  • New plain text editor in OLAT folders: create .txt and .css files instantly - no need to upload.
  • Various SCORM improvements.
  • Custom fields: user attributes are configurable by system administrators, not stored hardcoded.

OLAT 5.2 Public Release

Please note that OLAT 5.2.0 has only been released at the University of Zurich. The OLAT 5.2 Public Release is in fact OLAT 5.2.1.

The OLAT 5.2 release is a big step towards Web 2.0 and usability. In this release we tried to implement the results of the usability report done by the University of Berne. We also rebuilt the chat client using AJAX technology and updated the forum. Here is a short list of improvements:

  • Usability: New tabs for navigation, creating groups from within course editor, better publishing support etc.
  • Web 2.0/AJAX: Faster!
  • Better chat client: Now HTML/AJAX based
  • Forum: Mark threads as sticky or important, split threads
  • Deleting workflow: Now you can delete users, groups, courses or resources using sophisticated filters and with prior notification of users and owners
  • The OLAT help in German is now Wiki based (authors can help improve the manual!)

As a matter of fact, there are no Release Notes in the Bug Tracking System to this version.
