  This summer at the University of Zurich the first real online tests have been taken substituting paper-based tests in the field of veterinary medicine. These tests are not just self-tests; students can appeal the test's results should they fail. These online tests are based on a standard OLAT installation in IMS QTI format. The article further describes this major milestone in the e-learning process at the University of Zurich.

• Instant Messaging Technologien in Learning Management Systemen

  In the past few years, Instant Messaging has become popular in private as well as in economic environments. This work discusses the possibilities of applying Instant Messaging in a webbased learning environment and its didactic benefits and implements Instant Messaging tools into the learning environment of the University of Zurich. Current research in the fields of didactics and awareness are fundamental for this discussion. Instant Messaging tools try to connect learning individuals that are spatially separated. The tools should also enable spontaneous communication between learners as well as support the creation of learning groups. The results of this theoretical analysis serve as basis for the implementation of selected Instant Messaging elements into the web-based learning environment at the University of Zurich. The implementation is based on the Jabber Internet standard.
